Embracing the Flow - Mindfulness in the High Mountains

Reflecting on my incredible two weeks in Ladakh, nestled in the Indian Himalaya, which included an eight-day trek through some of the most breathtaking high-altitude landscape, I am overwhelmed with joy and gratitude for the amazing experience and the friendships formed.

When you sign up for a trek, you can never be completely sure of what to expect. The mountains will always impress with their grandeur and magnificence, which often become even more striking in varying weather conditions. However, everything else is a bit of a gamble, including your fellow trekkers, the trek guide or leader, the food, the durability of your tent, and how your body adapts to the altitude, among other factors. The possibilities are endless and often marked by uniqueness and originality.

At this point, you might wonder, "Why go?" The truth is, this quirkiness and originality are what make trekking so distinctive. It might not always match your sensibilities, but that is another aspect that can make your experience more rewarding. It all depends on how you react. How you handle your preconceived notions of right and wrong, and the expectations you have set before leaving. Are these fixed or flexible? Have you become resistant to change?

Each day is a timely reminder to live in the moment, as it's all that truly matters, especially in this demanding environment. This brings to mind the Reiki Way and its Precepts, which encourage you to let go, release your attachments, and enjoy the present moment while showing kindness and compassion to everyone, including yourself. Especially to yourself if your attachments are fixed and strong.

After participating in numerous long treks, I've encountered a wide variety of 'interesting' groups! This particular group stood out; they were lively, full of energy and anticipation, with two members from RSA, another from the USA, and the rest of us from 'Blighty'. From the very beginning, we connected well and stayed connected the entire time. Perfect....

Spending eight magnificent days trekking, mostly untouched by any signs of civilization, made it easy to feel profoundly connected to the Earth. As we ascended to the pass at 5,400 meters above sea level, each intentional step provided ample time to reflect, find tranquility and space, and meditate to the soothing rhythm of our footsteps.

As each day went by, even with the natural fatigue and challenges of living at such a high altitude, the harmonious joy among the group members became increasingly evident. The beauty of nature infused every cell of our bodies and radiated outward. A profound sense of healing was taking place, and compassion within the team was abundant and in free flow. It was a beautiful sight to witness and be a part of. And for those having difficulty with the altitude, the gift of Reiki was warmly welcomed and provided fellow trekkers with a much-needed boost.

Laughter, joy, and camaraderie were ever-present, turning the trek into a truly delightful and wonderful journey, despite the physical challenges that come with such an endeavor. The group's natural mindfulness made the experience enjoyable; it wasn't a struggle or arduous. It was simply peaceful harmony among a group of like-minded individuals.

Unintentionally, without being aware, the group was living according to the Reiki Precepts by staying present, savouring each forward step up the mountain and its stunning vistas; supporting one another, their worries and frustrations having been left behind. Being open to change, different perspectives, and compassion can lead to truly remarkable outcomes. It can serve as a positive ally in challenging times, bringing joy and harmony to everyone, with a radiance akin to sunlit kisses.

Just for today

I will not anger

I will not worry

I will give gratitude

I'll be true to myself and way

I'll be kind and compassionate to everything including myself.

Just a few short sentences, yet when enacted magnify into pure brilliance.

Beautiful day to you all.
